Spotify is shutting down its live audio app, Spotify Live, as it no longer makes sense as a standalone app. The company will instead offer limited live audio features on the main Spotify app, such as listening parties that allow top fans to connect with artists in virtual spaces. While it’s unclear whether Spotify Live features will still exist in the main audio app, the company says it will continue to invest in innovative formats for creators and listeners globally.
Spotify launched the audio-only app under the name Greenroom in 2021 as an answer to the buzz surrounding Clubhouse, a social audio app. To facilitate this, Spotify acquired Betty Labs, a live audio service, for €57 million (around $67.7 million at the time). However, the company has now decided to shut down Spotify Live.
